Material, memory, and living form. Noortjes paintings develop through layers of pigment, oil, clay, charcoal, metal and inherited materials. Figures, animals, landscapes, and bodily forma grow into visual worlds in which personal memory meets a wider cultural history.

ABOUT NOORTJE
Noortje van der Kooi is a Dutch-born painter, poet and multimedia artist living and working in Aruba.
Her practice brings together painting, poetry, voice, sound and moving image. Working intuitively and without preparatory sketches, she builds her paintings through layers of elemental pigments, powders, oils, clay, charcoal, metals and other materials carrying personal or cultural meaning.
Across her visual and literary work, recurring subjects include the body, womanhood, family structures, cultural memory, power, nature and the tension between individual experience and inherited narratives.
Pearls Woman is one multimedia form within her wider oeuvre. Alongside this project, Noortje creates independent paintings, poems, poetry songs and collaborative artistic productions.
She works from Art Root Studio, her creative space within Triple Gorilla Studios in Aruba.
